Funnily enough, I am actually reading a Jane Austen novel at the moment, Mansfield Park! I have also just purchased Northanger Abbey as I have not yet had the pleasure of reading it yet.

I understand where your Aunt is coming from and when I read old books from years ago I always think in the same way too, that you have to think of it in the context of the time it was written and how the people lived back then. Instead of not reading the books we can read them and learn about that time, but also know that that's not how we live now. I just adore Jane Austen's way of writing and her story plots! 😊

A really thought provoking post, thank you for sharing. 🤗

I re-read Mansfield Park in March! It's actually my least favourite Austen novel, but after my second read, I think I like it much more.

Also yes, I too absolutely love Jane Austen's writing style. I think she often gets somewhat discredited because she wrote courtship novels, had she written about more 'serious' topics, I think people would be much more ready to recognise her writing skills.

Nice! I finished Mansfield Park last week and I quite enjoyed it, though Pride & Prejudice is still my fav! I enjoyed reading about a different character than the ones Jane Austen normally writes about… Fanny Price is more quiet then Jane’s other heroines. But I did find that the last chapter was a bit hurried along for me and I felt like Jane Austen changed her way of writing at the end, so I didn’t really get to know what the characters were feeling… 🤔

Couldn’t agree more! 😄
