It's probably my Virgo nature coming out, but I've always felt especially fond of Elinor Dashwood. Emma Thompson was really too old to play her in the 1995 movie, but I liked her performance anyway. I'd be interested in hearing how you describe Austen's gentlemen.
Agree that she was a bit older but I think so was Kate Winslet as Marianne. And I personally liked that because I think I'd have been a little uncomfortable watching a romance between a very young heroine and Alan Rickman? I really like that movie, I think it's probably my favourite Austen novel adaptation. Everyone’s performance was so good.
And regarding the men in the Austen novels, my problem is I kind of see them as secondary characters, so I simply don't pay them enough attention. I think I'll have to give her novels another read just to focus on the heroes.
So enjoyed reading your thoughts on Jane Austen's heroines! I think I am a bit like Elizabeth Bennet and Elinor Dashwood. 🤗 I would be interested in reading a blog post about your thoughts on the gentleman in Jane Austen's novels maybe!? 🤍
Unfortunately, I've always read Austen's stories as being about the heroines, and the heroes to me feel like secondary characters there to support the heroines' stories. So I don't really pay them much attention. But my favourite is Henry from Northanger Abbey.
A good read! Catherine in Northanger is one of my favourite Austen characters. I remember being so pleasantly surprised by that novel when I read it last year.
Yes, I think it's a bit different from Austen's other works, maybe a targeted towards a younger audience, of course Austen herself was much younger when she wrote it, that's probably gives the story its energy, mainly through Catherine

Oh I really love this! It also speaks to Jane Austin's talent for writing!
Absolutely!!! She's such a great writer, the more you read her works the more you figure it out
